Mike Salmon led the pack away from the start in his Jaguar and held the lead for the whole of the first lap ahead of Graham Hill, Roy Salvadori, Peter Dodd, Bill Aston and Jeff Sparrow in similar cars. On lap 2 Hill took the lead and Sparrow spun at Lavant and Jack Sears nipped into sixth spot chased by Jimmy Blumer. Salvadori passed Salmon on lap 4 and followed Hill closely for the rest of the race. Salmon kept pace with the leaders for a few laps but then lost ground. Further down the field, Jack Sears Ford Cortina harried Mike Pendleton's 3.8 Jaguar. They battled for lap after lap, the Cortina once getting past the bigger car but eventually dropping back to finish seventh overall. Les Leston and also had a close race with his team-mate Peter Jop, the Rapiers finishing in 13th and 14th place. John Whitmore led the Mini-Coopers for the first four laps, though he was passed by Jimmy Blumer's Ford Cortina. Then John Fenning's Cooper led for a couple of laps until Whitmore overtook again. Christabel Carlisle chased these two in 3rd position in the class - 11th overall. On the last lap Fenning just nosed ahead of Whitmore at Woodcote but as the two cars went through the chicane, Fenning hit the brickwork and spun. By the time he recovered across the line, Christabel had taken second place. Source: Autosport and Autocar |
